âIâve taken our visiting cousin to Nice by foot and then by coastal train as far as Cannes where he will travel onwards from there. Iâll return by midafternoon. âC.â
Henri peered over her shoulder. âWeâre walking to Nice tonight?â
âNo, of course not,â she answered with a smile she hoped was reassuring. âI just want to buy us time.â
âItâs good that no one beyond your network knows about my mission here, but it means Iâve just exposed you all to more danger.â
âPart of our job,â she replied with a shrug. âCâmon. Letâs get you some food.â
As quietly as she could, Catherine shut the heavy door to their most recent hideout and guided Henri down the narrow, shadowed, winding lane. At the bottom of the hill, she tapped lightly on a door at the back of Remyâs restaurant. Not expecting anyone to respond at this late hour, she lifted the latch and led Henri into the pantry, where she found some bread, a hunk of cheese, and an opened bottle of wine.
Just as she was stashing them in her canvas sea bag, Remy appeared in a pair of undershorts at the threshold to his private apartments above the restaurant.
âSorry for waking you. An emergency,â she said by way of explanation, her easy smile belying the fact that her heart lurched with surprise at the sight of him. She inclined her head toward Henri. âWe had an unexpected visitor fall from the sky tonight. He hasnât eaten since he departed from England.â
âAh, well, please, come in,â Remy said. With the grace of the restaurateur he was, he urged Catherine, âWhy donât you two sit down, and Iâll make you an omelet.â
âOh, would you?â Catherine replied gratefully. âTo tell you the truth, Iâm faint with hunger, and so is Claude, here. Are you sure you can spare the eggs?â
Remy put a finger to his lips. âShhh. My sisterâs contraband chickens do their part. But donât tell anyone, especially Monsieur Guy!â Remy inclined his head to look behind his visitors. âWhere is that food hound, by the way?â
âBusy on the mountain,â Catherine replied. She retrieved the hunk of bread and cheese out of the canvas bag and set it before Henri at a small table inside Remyâs kitchen.
Meanwhile, their host poured each a half glass of wine. âCheers, and welcome.â
Catherine raised her glass to touch his and Henriâs. âAnd thank you, Remy.â
âIt is nothing,â he replied, cracking four precious eggs into a bowl and beating them briskly. He glanced at Henri curiously. âLanding in the moonlight this evening must be quite something. No wonder youâre hungry. Where to next?â
Catherine intervened with a warning smile, âYou know he canât tell you that.â
Trust no one! Remy could always sell the knowledge of Henriâs arrival toâ¦
Catherine despised such thoughts about Remy Poché, but exhaustion from what had been required of her the past few days was pressing down on her. She was feeling absolutely dizzy from the lack of a decent meal.
And what if the SOE had screwed
