“I’ve taken our visiting cousin to Nice by foot and then by coastal train as far as Cannes where he will travel onwards from there. I’ll return by midafternoon. –C.”

Henri peered over her shoulder. “We’re walking to Nice tonight?”

“No, of course not,” she answered with a smile she hoped was reassuring. “I just want to buy us time.”

“It’s good that no one beyond your network knows about my mission here, but it means I’ve just exposed you all to more danger.”

“Part of our job,” she replied with a shrug. “C’mon. Let’s get you some food.”

As quietly as she could, Catherine shut the heavy door to their most recent hideout and guided Henri down the narrow, shadowed, winding lane. At the bottom of the hill, she tapped lightly on a door at the back of Remy’s restaurant. Not expecting anyone to respond at this late hour, she lifted the latch and led Henri into the pantry, where she found some bread, a hunk of cheese, and an opened bottle of wine.

Just as she was stashing them in her canvas sea bag, Remy appeared in a pair of undershorts at the threshold to his private apartments above the restaurant.

“Ah, well, please, come in,” Remy said. With the grace of the restaurateur he was, he urged Catherine, “Why don’t you two sit down, and I’ll make you an omelet.”

“Oh, would you?” Catherine replied gratefully. “To tell you the truth, I’m faint with hunger, and so is Claude, here. Are you sure you can spare the eggs?”

Remy put a finger to his lips. “Shhh. My sister’s contraband chickens do their part. But don’t tell anyone, especially Monsieur Guy!” Remy inclined his head to look behind his visitors. “Where is that food hound, by the way?”

“Busy on the mountain,” Catherine replied. She retrieved the hunk of bread and cheese out of the canvas bag and set it before Henri at a small table inside Remy’s kitchen.

Meanwhile, their host poured each a half glass of wine. “Cheers, and welcome.”

Catherine raised her glass to touch his and Henri’s. “And thank you, Remy.”

“It is nothing,” he replied, cracking four precious eggs into a bowl and beating them briskly. He glanced at Henri curiously. “Landing in the moonlight this evening must be quite something. No wonder you’re hungry. Where to next?”

Catherine intervened with a warning smile, “You know he can’t tell you that.”

Trust no one! Remy could always sell the knowledge of Henri’s arrival to…

Catherine despised such thoughts about Remy Poché, but exhaustion from what had been required of her the past few days was pressing down on her. She was feeling absolutely dizzy from the lack of a decent meal.

And what if the SOE had screwed
